Susan Reisinger, Interim Pastor

Susan began as Interim Pastor of State College Presbyterian Church on February 1, 2011.  She was born in Altoona, but her family moved to Lancaster when she was young.  She has spent most of her educational and professional years relatively close by - in NJ, Eastern PA, and NY. She comes to us from her most recent Interim Pastor position in Morristown, NJ.  She received a Philosophy Degree from Franklin and Marshall College and graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary.

As Interim Pastor Susan will help us through the process of calling a new Senior Pastor. 

 

Joel Blunk, Associate Pastor

Joel has been with us since the summer of 1994. In addition to general pastoral responsibilities, Joel works with our high school youth group -- FISH, the Board of Deacons, the Mission and Outreach Ministry Unit, and the Spiritual Formation Ministry Unit which is developing small group ministries and contemplative practices for our congregation.

Joel, who is originally from St. Louis, Missouri, and his wife Kristen, have three college-age sons. They moved here from Nashville, Tennessee, where Joel attended Vanderbilt Divinity School.

 

Deannine Shipman, Director of Education and Program

Deannine spent her childhood years in North Carolina, California, and Virginia, while her family moved around the country. She graduated from Presbyterian College in 1982 and received her MA from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1984. She worked in churches in South Carolina, Georgia, and Birmingham, AL before coming to SCPC in November 1997.

Her responsibilities include guidance and oversight of the education programs such as Sunday School, LOGOS, and Adult Education. She is also a staff resource to the Congregational Fellowship and Membership Ministry Units. Deannine participates in leading worship and especially enjoys doing the Children's Messages on Sunday mornings. She and husband Steve have three children, Abby, Joshua, and Brittany who are active in the youth programs.

Ned Wetherald, Director of Music Ministry

Ned has served SCPC since 1994 after nine years of service at The Hagerstown, Maryland Presbyterian Church. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Church Music and Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. Ned is our organist, he directs or supervises all choirs and the handbell choir, works with the pastors in planning worship, and edits the PresbyPost -- our monthly newsletter.

In his spare time, he conducts the Williamsport Civic Chorus. Ned has a grown son who lives in Nevada, and he and his wife, Karen, a musician and teacher, live in Bellefonte with their three cats.

Diana Malcom, Associate in Ministry for College-Age Ministries

Diana has been on staff since 1999. Originally from DuBois, she came to SCPC after serving in ministry as Camp Director of Geneva Hills in the Scioto Valley Presbytery and Calvin Center in the Greater Atlanta Presbytery. She has degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary, Penn State, and Lock Haven University.

She enjoys her varied ministry responsibilities at SCPC, including working with middle school youth, college-age, and mission ministries. She and her husband Blair have two children, Wilson and Lydia.

Kim Hunziker, Mission Associate

Kim joined the SCPC staff in this new part-time position in February 2009. This position was made possible by an existing endowment, piloted from 2009-2010, and made a permanent staff posiiton in 2011.

Prior to her membership and involvement at SCPC Kim held positions at churches in Missouri, Illinois, and Nebraska as Director of Christian Education and youth Ministries. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy/Religion and Psychology and a Masters in Counseling. In addition, Kim has pursued continuing education in a number of areas including theology and youth ministry. As an active member of SCPC for the past six years she has been a Chrysalis leader, FISH leader and Confirmation Class planner and coordinator. She has also worked with the Passion Project helping others discern their gifts and call, led the Spirit of the Arts series, and was actively involved in our Habitat House build in 2008.  Most recently, Kim has been instrumental in developing the Passage Program for High School seniors. 

Kim will help to expand our mission effort beyond our church walls by enabling and supporting  the growth of our church community's mission and outreach. 

Kim and her husband, Phil Tometich, live in Bellefonte with their two children Alex and Anna.

Martha Trout, Membership and Program Associate

Martha is a lifelong resident of State College and member of SCPC. She received a BS in Individual and Family Studies in the College of Human Development at Penn State. After operating an Administrative Consulting business and managing a local independent psychologist's private practice for several years, she joined the staff in this new position formed in 2003.

As Program Associate, Martha manages the church database, supports the church programs with the development and publication of informational materials, and compiles the Annual Report. She works closely with the Membership Ministry Unit, organizes and co-facilitates the New Member Classes, coordinates the wedding calendar, and provides administrative support for the Session, the Education Ministries, and LOGOS. She also serves as the FISH Administrator,and manages the Church Website.

She is an ordained Elder and has volunteered with LOGOS and FISH. Martha and husband Kerry, Facilities Manager at WPSU-TV, live in State College and have a daughter, Kristi, who is a third generation Penn State graduate.

Janet Heasley, Church Secretary

Janet grew up in Elmira, New York. She graduated from Ohio Northern University with a BS/BA and moved to State College in 1983. She joined the membership of SCPC in 1988 and joined the staff in 2000.

Janet has served as a Deacon and volunteered with Stay and Play, LOGOS, and FISH programs of which her two children, Brad and Kelsey, have also participated in. She is married to Paul who is the Agricultural Sciences teacher at State College Area High School.

Laura Steager, Stay and Play Director

Laura joined the SCPC staff on June 1, 2008.  A native of Dubois, PA, she is a graduate of Muskingum College (a small Presbyterian College) in New Concord, OH.  She then moved to State College where she volunteered at SCPC as a FISH leader.  While she was working at The Meadows Psychiatric Center in the Children's Unit, she met her husband Bernie.  They moved to Harrisburg, PA where she served on the Session of Faith Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Education Committee for Presbytery, a Sr. High Youth Leader, a Sunday School teacher, Nursery Attendant and a Stephen Minister.  While living in Harrisburg Laura also worked with the Learning and Sharing Center as a toddler room teacher and with Keystone Residence as the Behavior Specialist -- working with people who have developmental disabilities living in residential community homes.  They returned to State College in 2004 and Laura has spent many hours volunteering with LOGOS (recently wrapping up two years as LOGOS Director), Sunday School and Summer Sunday School.

Laura came to our church through a family connection -- her father is Al Wilson and her sister is SCPC Associate in Ministry, Diana Malcom. Bernie and Laura live in Port Matilda with their son, Ethan.

Sharon Kasting, Treasurer

Sharon served as the financial secretary from 1992-1997 and became the church treasurer in 1997. She has a BS in Accounting from Miami University in Ohio and an MBA from the University of Michigan. Sharon worked for Arthur Anderson in Denver and for Bank of the West in California prior to moving to State College in 1988.

She is married to Jim Kasting and has three sons.

Anne Thomas, Assistant Treasurer

Anne grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. She graduated from the University of Michigan with both a Bachelor's degree in Voice Performance and an MBA. Because she is a Navy wife, she has lived extensively overseas as well as in various locations on the Eastern Seaboard.

Her husband, Scott, is enjoying his retirement from Penn State's Naval ROTC Unit. Anne and her family moved to State College in 2004, and she began working at SCPC at the end of 2005. She and Scott have two children, Hunter and Alexandra.

Paul Sheets, Building Manager

Paul grew up in Washington, PA, and spent four years in the Marine Corps. He made his home in Greene County on 17 acres showing American saddlebred horses and field trailing English pointer bird dogs. He worked for 20 years at McGraw Edison Power Systems and eventually became a General Supervisor before selling everything and moving to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.

He and his wife, Beverly, owned and operated a Bed and Breakfast there for 11 years. They moved to State College in 1997 where he worked at Skills and then joined the SCPC staff in 1998. Paul and Beverly have one daughter, Pam, a Penn State graduate, who is the director of Parks & Recreation in Shenandoah County, VA.

Nelson Hite, Assistant Custodian

Nelson is originally from Altoona and has lived in State College for 25 years. He is a former Independent Contractor Courier and joined the church staff in July 2005. He is married to Rhonda Stemn.
